STRESS RELIEF CD.

The stress relief CD, in one form or another, has proved successful in initiating and sometimes necessarily completing the process of restoring highly stressed clients to mental and emotional harmony and balance. They regularly include genuinely suicidal clients, who can readily be identified with the Luscher colour test.

Social Service staff have provided me with valuable insights in developing the various approaches to CD stress relief. To help them in their work, I invariably introduce them to the Luscher test.

On one occasion, just one day after one of my presentations to a group of twenty Social Service workers, one staff-member telephoned to say that she had tested the people she had visited that morning and was rather unimpressed with the results. A lady client she knew well had selected (+74) twice, indicating strong suicidal tendencies. The lady had been signed-off that very morning by the psychiatrist after three months treatment.

On my suggestion, she revisited the lady that afternoon, who admitted making arrangements to end it all that evening ... and showed how. Before my friend left, the client's daughter, a senior nurse, arrived to see her mother. She greeted the Social Service worker with: 'What do you think you are doing here? Mother was discharged from care this morning. Can't you people leave her alone?'

In this, as in countless other similar situations, the stress relief  CD alone has proved sufficient to provide the confused person with better options than self-destruction. Luscher tests reveal that stress levels decrease from eight or higher to two in less than two months. One session of precision analysis can, of course, accelerate the recovery process for those who seek effective help.

Having experienced the state myself it helps ... in retrospect ... to accept that suicide is the sincerest form of self-criticism. I have heard that, on one occasion, a poet was advised that another aspiring poet he knew had committed suicide. 'I never realised,' he said, 'that he was so public-spirited.'

A British counselling magazine featured an article on the subject in March 1993. A case study of a suicidal woman was provided to illustrate 'the kind of work that can be done', explaining that all the elements of despair, isolation, anger and helplessness 'are projected into the counsellor who must then act as a container'. The client, it was reported, is not cured, 'as she still gets depressed and has suicidal thoughts'. The counsellor has 'placed her professional expertise at her disposal by applying important theoretical understandings’, with the objective of illustrating that life is worth living.

The woman was severely suicidal when she first presented herself for therapy four years ago. She had been having twice-weekly sessions ever since.
